Edible Vancouver Island Announces Karen Elgersma as New Publisher

VICTORIA, B.C. – (March 22nd, 2021) – Karen Elgersma joins the award-winning Edible Communities organization as owner and publisher of Edible Vancouver Island.

Joining founders Dawn Postnikoff and Danika McDowell, the talented trio are excited to make their mark by growing the magazine that continues to make an impact on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

Elgersma brings an unmatched level of knowledge, expertise and relationships earned from her twenty-five years in media. She specializes in story-driven media, video production and digital media and has a passion for regional food, farms, producers and all things culinary. As a lifestyles specialist, Elgersma has been telling the stories of farmers, chefs, food artisans, vintners, makers and cooks through a variety of media (including television, video, print media, podcasts and radio) throughout her career.

Edible Vancouver Island was founded in 2018 in Courtenay, B.C., by Postnikoff and McDowell. Through captivating images and inspiring stories, this regional magazine connects readers with local food and the people who produce it. Together we comprise the entire region’s dynamic food & drink culture.

“As we continue to grow the business, having someone with Karen’s expertise, network and energy in the Southern Vancouver Island and Greater Victoria region is a real coup,” says  Postnikoff. “Karen’s passion for storytelling, combined with her love of the culinary world will be a huge asset for fans of Edible.”

“Dawn and I are really excited about Karen’s knowledge of video – adding video to our digital offerings will be great for both our online viewers and our advertising community,” says McDowell.

Known for her enthusiasm and joyful approach, Elgersma joins Edible Vancouver Island in addition to her current role as owner of Karen Elgersma Media (KEM). Established in 2018, KEM has grown into one of Victoria’s leading video production companies with a focus on creating story-driven media. Prior to KEM, Elgersma was the Executive Director of Tourism Cowichan. She was also the Manager of Lifestyle, Travel and Media for Destination Greater Victoria, where she focused on marketing and media for South Vancouver Island.

Throughout her career, Elgersma has built a reputation as a master storyteller. She had a long, successful career in television as the host of go! Island, a daily magazine show that told the stories of the people, places and events of Vancouver Island. As a recent graduate of Royal Roads University, Elgersma’s thesis on the power of local storytelling was produced as an award-winning documentary and further inspired her career as a writer, producer and storyteller. Elgersma is always looking for ways to tell local stories that will impact community in positive and thoughtful ways. She inspires her team to think outside the box, take risks and find innovative and creative ways to engage viewers through digital storytelling.

“I have found a wonderful team of creative foodies to collaborate with in both Edible Vancouver Island and the Edible Communities family,” says Elgersma. “I look forward to working with this incredible team to continue to build the magazine in years to come.”

Looking forward, the next chapter of Edible Vancouver Island will draw on the team’s depth of experience, creating engaging content and building their audience. They currently work with over 150 businesses and organizations across the Island, the Gulf Islands and surrounding areas, and plan to add more digital offerings (such as video content) as they continue to grow.
