Recently celebrating their 10th anniversary in Ucluelet, Black Rock Oceanfront Resort is excited about the modernized re-design of their restaurant and lounge. Keeping with an ocean-centric theme, Currents and the Big Beach Bar & Lounge are fresh, clean and modern design-forward spaces. We recently connected with their team to learn more about what to expect.

What changes will we see with the new menu and design concept?

The Big Beach Bar & Lounge menu has gone back to its original concept, offering tapas-style share plates. We want guests to really enjoy time with friends and family in a naturalistic, intimate atmosphere. Currents Restaurant has moved away from the "fine dining" focus and has a family-friendly, casual-but-stylish dining atmosphere with a menu to match.

Are there any favourites from the old menu that you've kept?

Yes, we’ve kept several guest favourites such as our popular seafood chowder and the brisket burger.

What else can you tell us about the menu?

Our culinary team, under the direction of Food & Beverage Manager Brian Michael, worked with menu designer Kristi
Richards and Sysco Victoria to design the locally inspired menus. We source as many products as possible from Island-based producers.

Describe the new cocktail program.

The new cocktail program in the Big Beach Bar & Lounge was developed to use local, fresh ingredients such as herbs, sea salt, kelp and honey, and to give a modernist’s twist to the classics—with a hint of Tiki.

Who is your ideal customer?

There is no "ideal" customer. Black Rock welcomes guests from across all continents, including families, weddings, corporate groups, travellers, nature enthusiasts and artists. The menus were developed to appeal to the broad spectrum of guests who come through our doors.

What can diners expect when they dine at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort?

Come in and enjoy the experience on your own or with friends and family, but really take in the magic of the surrounding
location. The hotel sits on the winding edge of the West Coast and truly is a captivating venue.

Have you made any changes to your wine list?

In the last quarter of 2019, we partnered with Desert Hills Estate Winery in Oliver, B.C., to develop the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort label for our house wine, also available as a takeaway for hotel guests.

Three words that describe the dining experience at Black Rock:

Natural. Captivating. Memorable.
