There is nothing quite like a stunning photo of a perfectly plated dish; food photography can evoke a range of physical and mental reactions. If you are looking to further your education on how to take inspiring food photos, this 3 Day Storytelling Food Photography Intensive on Salt Spring Island is for you—whether you’re an amateur photographer who is always trying to get the perfect angle, or a professional photographer wanting to take their food photography to the next level.

Host DL Acken is a food and architectural photographer who travels the world to capture the heart of the food we eat. “…to me a food photo is successful if it makes you want to reach in and eat it, or at least engage with it on several different sensory levels,” she says. Acken takes a natural approach to her photography and, considering her long list of clients and her impressive publication accomplishments, it is clear her style resonates with viewers.

During the three-day workshop, Acken will teach you the fundamentals of food photography storytelling, including understanding the human element and how to capture the character of a place through its food. The course will cover the essential photography equipment needed to get that perfect shot, as well as discuss the props and other styling aspects that will change the effects of the photograph.

In addition to Acken’s expertise, award-winning food stylist Aurelia Lovet will provide you with tips and tricks to help you style food for your photography in a way that tells a story and helps you curate your own “look.” Of course, to style and photograph food, it is essential to actually have food, and chef and cookbook author Emily Lycopolus will keep your bellies full with her delectable dishes. Molly Wilson of Bullock Lake Farm will also be designing a gorgeous styled table scape shoot for Saturday night in the Bullock Barns, and farm-to-table fire chef Angela Hartley will be creating amazing feasts to photograph (and enjoy!).

With each day providing unique photography opportunities and instruction, this workshop will provide you with an arsenal of knowledge to help you up your food photography game.
