Readers' Choice Awards

It's the season for Readers' Choice Awards, where hundreds of categories are put forth for locals to vote on, with many categories in the food and beverage industry.

The Comox Valley Reader’s Choice Awards results are in, so check their awards listing for some new ideas on places to check out! (Maybe the winning Hen and Hog for breakfast, Cooks Restaurant for a burger lunch, and Locals for a fine dining evening? Sounds like a delicious day to us!)

The Campbell River Reader's Choice Awards have also tallied up the votes and published their awards list. So if you're in town and wondering where to find the best caesar cocktail, you could check out Socal Restaurant and Lounge; if you've a hankering for some fish and chips, Dick's Fish and Chips will satisfy your craving with their award-winning dish; and if you're looking for the best vegetarian fare in town, you'll have to check out Fresh Start Bistro.

And if you're a Victoria local, you still have time to vote in your Readers' Choice Awards! Voting ends November 30th.

Relocations and Expansions

Gladstone Brewing Company, a local Comox Valley Favourite, is set for expansion in 2020. Their successful business is ready for more space, and the business plans to add 3,000 square feet to their operation, which will add space to the patio, tasting room, and production areas.

Powell River is looking to welcome a new vodka and gin producer next year. Salish Sea Spirits presently operates out of the Kootenays but is excited about working towards making Powell River their home. Once settled, the business plans to expand their currently honey-based line with different flavours and even begin production of some non-alcoholic beverages.

Try Something New

Mmm…here’s something you should definitely try: Benino Gelato is testing out crepe cakes at their Comox location. With 60 thin layers of crepe and mousse, this dessert is bound to impress. It might be time to throw a dinner party just so you can serve this delicacy!

If you’re in the mood for some authentic Latin cuisine, then new establishment Javier’s Latin Cuisine Restaurant in Courtenay will be right up your alley. The restaurant serves Columbian and other Latin American dishes inside its festive interior.

Festivals

Looking for some activities to attend this November? On November 9th, attend the Merridale Craft Spirit Festival, and “taste the spirits of Vancouver Island’s best craft distilleries.” Purchase your tickets for the three-hour evening event and enjoy the cocktails and tasting bites from the Merridale’s Cobble Hill kitchen.

Then, on November 23rd, make your way to our wonderful West Coast for the Clayoquot Oyster Festival. The event says the dress code is “cocktail with ocean accents” and features a best oyster dish competition. With a live 12-piece soul and funk band to set the mood, this event is bound to be a good time.

Coming Soon

Victoria, mark your calendars for February 2020: you will be the new home of Australian-inspired café Bear & Joey! With owners who used to own restaurants in Sydney, Australia, and Australian Chef Tait Bourke curating the menu, the restaurant is sure to offer genuine Australian cuisine in their vibrant and welcoming location.
