NEW PLACES TO VISIT

Tidal Taco Shack, one of our favourite ocean-side stops in Qualicum Bay, is opening a second location at Brooks Landing in Nanaimo. Meanwhile, Paul’s Diner by Fol Epi is now open at Paul’s Motor Inn in downtown Victoria, and if you’re feeling a bit adventurous, consider Perverted Ice Cream, the latest ice cream shop in Victoria — worth a visit if only because of the name!

At Woodstone Manor on Galiano Island, we are excited to try the new menu by 3-Michelin star Chef Katsuyuki Sekihata (Seki). And Chef Josh Gonneau, formerly of Cibo Trattoria in Vancouver, is now the Executive Chef and GM at the newly re-opened Youbou Bar & Grill in the Lake Cowichan area.

Port Alberni, known for its popular Twin City Brewing Company, is also home to several hidden gems that should be on your list – check out the unassuming Sehmi Sushi Japanese Restaurant at the Timberlodge RV & Campground.

THINGS TO TRY

Rootside Provisions has recently introduced the Esquimalt Wine Company, and we are excited about their new Rosso Vermouth – Clover Blossom Honey Wine and Schönburger white from Venturi-Schultz Vineyards, is fortified with spirit from Stillhead Distillery and 32 herbs and spices.

VENTURING NORTH

In Campbell River, we are looking forward to new entrepreneurial initiatives, as the Economic Development team is hosting food innovator workshops to promote growth in the industry. As an example, Stonehouse Teas has recently partnered with 5 local businesses to create the new Campbell River Signature Blend. And Session Bistro & Spin Room is the newest foodie destination, combining spin classes with locally inspired food and classy cocktails.

Finally, we want to congratulate Lesley Stav, the spunky president of the North Vancouver Island Chefs Association, and Chef Ronald St. Pierre, owner of Locals Restaurant in Courtenay. Lesley has been recognized by the Canadian Culinary Federation with their President’s Award, while Chef Ronald was recently inducted into their prestigious Honour Society for his passion and dedication to the culinary profession.
