Eat Well, Live Well

Canada’s refreshed guide to a healthy diet and lifestyle

It is now easier than ever to know how to eat well on a daily basis.  Gone are the food groups and portion sizes of yore, replaced by simple reminders to eat more fruits, veggies and plant-based proteins, drink lots of water, cook at home and eat mindfully. Happily, the dedicated farmers, fishers, and artisanal producers of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands make it easy to fill our plates with local fare.

  • Fruits and vegetables should fill half your plate; proteins—especially plant-based proteins such as legumes, tofu and nuts—should fill the remainder. Look for locally produced pulses, grains and lentils. (We particularly like the wheat berries from Saanichton Farm).
  • Meat, fish and dairy are fine in moderation. (Alcohol too—though we think there’s always a case to be made for a glass of Vancouver Island wine!)
  • Shop local markets and choose organic when you can.
  • Prepare your own meals to avoid the perils of over-processed food.
  • Eat with friends and family.
  • Make water your drink of choice.
