For Patsy and Bruce Tanner, running an orchard isn't a hobby—it's a way of life. With 40 years of experience growing produce, the pair is passionate about providing their certified organic apples to Vancouver Island.

In 1994, the couple moved from Victoria, where they had owned and operated Tanner's Orchard in Victoria from 1980–1994. They had grown over 50 varieties of apples, pears, plums and quince. But a new adventure awaited them in Cobble Hill, where they cleared five acres in the Kingburne Valley.

Their orchard now grows Liberty apples, which are an excellent choice for both eating fresh and using in cooking. This type of apple was chosen with sustainable agriculture in mind, as Liberty apples have a natural disease and fungus resistance, which can be a challenge to overcome when growing apples on Vancouver Island. The Liberty apple is a cross between Macoun apple and a crab apple and was developed via natural selection and released in 1978.

You can find their apples for sale at a number of markets and stores on Vancouver Island, so pull out your favourite apple recipes and get ready to enjoy the fresh flavours of a crisp, local Liberty apple from Tanner's Orchard.
