Summer days seem to drift endlessly by, but then autumn suddenly appears around the corner. The lure of autumn days is in its quiet serenity, where the heat of summer is behind us but the appeal of the outdoors still holds its charm. Nothing is more perfect than enjoying great food and delicious libations in the fresh air; this is the season to embrace it all.

Whether it’s at a beach, in the woods, or just in your backyard, take the opportunity to savour the outdoors before the days become too chilly to dine outside. We are fortunate here on Vancouver Island to be treated to some lovely weather during September and October and gathering around a table, a campfire, or on a picnic blanket with family and friends is always a tantalizing idea.

Take advantage of local produce to inspire your meal as island markets and local farms offer an array of fruits and vegetables to inspire your menu. Make your gathering cozy and comfortable for fall—pillows and blankets will help with cooler days. “The sky’s the limit” is quite literally the case, whether you want to be dining outdoors during the daylight or well into twlight. A few décor touches such as florals (see featured centerpiece by Adria Lipsett of Little Bee Blooms) will add colour and texture to your outdoor table. Add pumpkins and gourds, fall leaves, along with tealights, lanterns, candles, twinkle lights, or even “just for effect” chandelier fixtures. If conditions allow, a campfire is always a hit, especially with youngsters, but a propane fire pit will do the trick too.

Keep the food prep for an outdoor meal efficient, easy and in keeping with the season. Prepare a salad ahead of time, such as a Harvest Bean Salad, and accompany it with quiche, meat pie, or chilli. Or if you prefer, afternoon tea sandwiches, pumpkin scones, and caramel apples are also perfect for an autumn outdoor gathering.

Whether entertaining friends and family or simply enjoying a picnic for two, check out local Island ciders from Sea Cider Farm. Be sure to try their popular Kings and Spies Cider comprised of King apples, Northern Spies apples, and other community-sourced apples. This award-winning cider is especially popular for the fall season, and a portion of the proceeds helps support the Growing Chef program here in B.C.  Also featured in our outdoor dining experience is the Ruby Rose Cider, a lovely semi-sweet cider that has been infused with rhubarb, adding a beautiful colour to any harvest table. For those preferring a non-alcoholic cider, the Temperance Bonnie is a lovely sparkling blend of apples and blackberries, with a nod to Dr. Bonnie Henry; a portion of the proceeds from this beverage supports various mental health programs in the province.

Our outdoor dining experience was highlighted with the most wonderful cake provided by Countess In the Kitchen, an up-and-coming local business that excels in both artistry and outstanding product. Chanelle’s creations are not only visually stunning, but also delicious right down to the last morsel. This featured carrot cake buttercream cake was the perfect finale to an autumn menu.

We are fortunate here on Vancouver Island to be able to source so much local fruit and vegetables and at the same time support local businesses such as Sea Cider Farmhouse, Little Bee Blooms, and Countess In the Kitchen.  Let’s help these local businesses continue to thrive by supporting our own. Be sure to get outside and enjoy the allure of autumn, soaking in the crisp fall air while feasting on the bounty of our beautiful island.
