New Spaces

Francis Bread is in the process of building a new wood-fired bakery on Salt Spring Island at 319 Upper Ganges Road. They hope to be in there baking early Spring 2023. In the meantime, they have been doing pop-ups outside their new location.

Mattone Market + Gelato has recently moved and is now located at Mattone Italian Kitchen, situated alongside the ocean and Seawalk. In addition to continuing to serve their delectable Gelato and Sorbetto, they now offer a range of other tasty treats such as Espresso drinks, Panini, Baked goods, Beverages, Grab-N-Go meals, and retail items. Go visit their new location for a delicious treat!

Mensch Kitchen & Catering (pictured left) is a new catering company located on Vancouver Island, with a primary focus in the Cowichan Valley but not limited to it. They specialize in catering remarkable events, weddings, and corporate gatherings with a commitment to serving honest food that is rooted in ethics. Mensch is quickly becoming Vancouver Island's leading caterer and is run by the Shipley Brothers, Daniel and Michael, who purchased Farm's Gate Foods in 2015 and has now rebranded to Mensch as a means of improving their vision and honoring their Jewish heritage. Their dedication to sustainability and ethical sourcing is a core value that sets them apart in the industry.

The Chocolate Project has relocated from the Victoria Public Market to a new location on Blanshard Street in Victoria. This specialty shop is known for its selection of bean-to-bar chocolate from various countries around the globe. Along with the chocolate offerings, they also provide educational services, tastings, and sales for those seeking a unique and delicious experience. 

Exciting news for food lovers in Ucluelet! A new eatery called The Break Cafe & Bistro is set to open this spring. While details on the menu and exact opening date are still to be announced, locals and visitors can look forward to enjoying delicious food and drinks in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. 

New to the dining scene in Victoria's Inner Harbour, Fathom offers unique flavours inspired by the rugged west coast in an engaging atmosphere that emphasizes connection and shared experiences. On March 29th, Culinaire will take place at the Victoria Conference Centre. This event provides foodies with the opportunity to indulge in a variety of unique restaurants and high-quality food and beverage purveyors in our region. Attendees can savor the chefs' inspired creations and signature dishes while enjoying an extensive selection of wines, cocktails, craft beer, cider, sodas, and locally roasted coffee. Interact with chefs, restaurateurs, mixologists, brewers, and winemakers and experience all that our exceptional food and beverage community has to offer. Wine enthusiasts: Victoria is set to host its first-ever natural wine festival, featuring an array of fantastic BC agencies and wineries. Sample over 200 wines from 30 importers and BC producers at this event. You'll have the opportunity to engage with the people leading the charge for sustainable wine production and consumption in British Columbia. Whistle Buoy Brewing Company has taken an innovative and experimental approach in crafting their latest beer, using an artificial intelligence (AI) to generate the recipe. Dubbed as 'Robo Beer', the hazy pale ale was created by an AI designed to enhance content creation in a user-friendly manner.

Brentwood Bay Resort has announced the appointment of a new Executive Chef, Matt Cusano, who was formerly with Boom and Batten. 

Country Grocer has acquired four 49th Parellel Grocery stores, located in Duncan, Cedar, Chemainus, and Ladysmith. With the completion of these conversions, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands will now have a total of 11 Country Grocer locations to serve their communities.

Closures
 

Oak Bay Marina Restaurant, a beloved establishment in Oak Bay for over three decades, has closed down due to economic challenges stemming from inflation, sourcing, and staffing issues. After years of serving the community, the restaurant shut its doors on March 5th. 

Das Nest Restaurant  on Mayne Island has made the tough decision to shut down operations permanently. As of March 13th, the restaurant has ceased all services except for their signature sourdough loaves, which are still available for pre-order. However, the owners have stated that they will continue to hold special events throughout the summer season. For further updates, please follow their social media accounts.
