Sara Jade Gooding of Radiance + Ritual at Dharma Temple (Salt Spring Island, Vancouver and Calgary) shares her tips for mindful tea meditation at home.

Set aside time each day to sit with tea.

Clean the area: a clear space contributes to clearing the mind.

Begin with teaware that you treasure: “Choosing a handmade vessel, crafted with mastery and intention, is something that adds depth to your tea practice.”

Rinse the teaware with hot water to create a clean beginning: this represents washing away the past and clearing the way for a new experience.

Pour the hot water over your tea, and develop a sense for when it’s ready.

Lift the bowl using two hands and bring to your heart before sipping.

Returning the bowl to your heart is a simple gesture that connects you to the tea’s virtue.

Do not place the bowl down until the cup is empty.

Refill and repeat this meditation for three bowls of tea in silence.

Drink slowly, and allow for the beginners’ mind of emptiness.
