Most of us love a good story, and some very special ones will be shared live and on film at the Star Cinema in Sidney on Sunday, March 3rd. The series “What’s Your Story” features a legacy of memories and special stories in three new short films that include Saanich Peninsula seniors and elders. A popular media personality will also be there to share some of the best stories live from their recent books.

Meet Marilyn Loveless, a community leader who worked as a leader and local politician, the force behind so many local initiatives. She grew up in the historic village of Todd Inlet, and her memories of growing up on the Saanich Peninsula will give you a unique glimpse into what life was like here 70 year ago—and make you laugh!

Peter Chance is 103 years young, and his stories of growing up in Ottawa as well as serving in the Navy during World War II are truly incredible. Peter has called Vancouver Island home for the past three decades and his legacy is truly remarkable.

We are also honored to feature John Elliott, Elder and Knowledge Keeper of the WSÁNEĆ people. John and his family are deeply rooted in their community, with a lineage of preserving WSÁNEĆ art, language and culture. Long before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada identified the revitalization of Indigenous languages as a key to reconciliation, regional efforts were taking steps toward this goal, and perhaps no one personifies these efforts better than John, a First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation board member and SENĆOŦEN language teacher and speaker.

Tickets for both 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. presentations on March 3rd are $15 in advance at the Star Cinema and online at Eventbrite: https://star-cinema-whats-your-story.eventbrite.ca. As space permits, tickets will also be available at the door for $20. Guest author and storyteller will be Gregor Craigie from CBC Radio.

These dynamic presentations are an initiative of REACH! (West Coast Reach Association), a local charity established by Peninsula residents Anne-Marie and Peter Brimacombe. REACH! provides programs and produces shows and events that utilize the performing arts for social good. The films to be premiered have been produced by local filmmaker Karen Elgersma and her media team. Star Cinema in Sidney is also an active and valued partner in this endeavour.

Funding for this project has been provided by the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund through United Way Southern Vancouver Island.
