To Watch

Victoria-produced food docuseries Moosemeat & Marmalade returned for its fifth season last week on the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN). The show stars Victoria-based Indigenous bush cook Art Napoleon and classically trained chef Dan Hayes as they embark on another globe-trotting culinary adventure documented in 13 all-new episodes. The new season takes viewers on an epic around-the-world adventure from remote communities throughout B.C. (including many stops on the Island this season, in beautiful Haida Gwaii, the Cowichan Valley and more!), across Canada and overseas to Wales and Ireland. We also have a featured recipe from them on our website that is the perfect hot dish to enjoy on a winter day.

The seventh season of the Canadian Master Chef is premiering today, and there’s a good reason to tune in this season: Comox Valley chef Thea VanHerwaarden is back for her second chance to win $100,000. She took second place in 2017, and she’s looking forward to competing against a field of previous “all-star” contestants.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Twin City Brewing in Port Alberni. They were recently recognized by the BC Ale Trail as providing the best brewery experience in B.C. They were acknowledged not only as having exceptional beer and a delicious menu, but as having pivoted well to accommodate COVID-19 measures and prioritize their patrons’ safety.

Congratulations also go out to Carmen Wakeling, the CEO and co-owner of Eatmore Sprouts & Greens in Courtenay. She was recently awarded the BC Agriculture Council’s Award for Excellence In Agriculture Leadership to be recognized for her accomplishments and leadership in the agriculture and agri-food sector.

Expanding/Newly Opened

The Little Corner Sandwich Shop in Cobble Hill has recently expanded, opening a second location in Duncan, following the same food truck model as their flagship shop. They serve home-made comfort food such as burgers, mac and cheese. Find their new shop at 277 Government Street.

The popular vegan butcher shop in Victoria is also expanding. The Very Good Butchers plan to open their bigger location in May with a quick-service restaurant and retail outlet. There will be plenty of space to accommodate social distancing, and the outdoor patio with an additional beer and wine menu is sure to be a hit when the warmer months find us again.

A third location of Tandoori Flavour has been kept busy since they opened at the end of the year. The Oak Bay Avenue location wasted no time in becoming a new neighbourhood favourite, the quality traditional Indian food prepared by experienced chefs effectively drawing customers back for more.

If you’re looking for a mew place to check out in Coombs, try the newly opened James Island Grill, and opt for a tasty item from their large menu that offers burgers, sandwiches, burritos, wraps, and hot dogs.

Treat Yourself

Chocolates are good any day of the year, not just Valentine’s Day, so make it a priority to treat yourself or your loved ones to some beautiful chocolates from Cocoa Love. Handmade in Duncan, the colourful treats feature natural flavours and vegan ingredients to become sweet little works of art.

Summer Plans

Nootka Marine Adventures is bringing back its annual foodie affair in late summer this year. The West Coast Culinary Adventure invites food and wine lovers to its annual retreat in August 2021. The 3-day event draws an intimate gathering of food lovers yearly at a luxury floating resort in Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Delectable multi-course dinners will be expertly paired with fine wines and craft beers, curated by an onsite sommelier and cicerone, and will be served to cohort dining groups.
