Ready to be inspired? Then take a read through the BC Tourism Resiliency Network’s “Stories of Resiliency,” which profiles tourism businesses in British Columbia who have adapted and overcome the challenges they have faced due to the pandemic. Or, specific to Vancouver Island, check out the “Storm Riders Series” by Tourism Vancouver Island, which celebrates the strength of our culinary industry while highlighting how businesses have faced pandemic challenges.

The City of Victoria has applications for its 2021 community garden start-up grant open until October 22. The funding, which will be awarded in December, is meant to help eligible organizations with designing and implementing community gardens or orchards to help with food security and sustainability.

Last year, the Goldstream Farmers’ Market decided to extend their operating dates past October until the end of November. It was so successful that they’ve decided to do so again, with the market open Saturdays from 10am to 2pm until November 27.

New Locations

The Very Good Butchers (photo left, from Facebook) opened a second location this month at 515 Chatham Street, Victoria. The new shop is the beginning of what the brand hopes will soon become an expansion across North America and features a restaurant, retail space, vegan butcher shop and deli.

Jackknife Pizza has found a new home at the Saratoga Beach Golf Club in Black Creek, opening last Wednesday, much to the relief of their pizza-loving customers. Get your ‘za from 3pm to 8pm Wednesday through Sunday during the winter season.

Local Experiences

It’s never to early to start getting your Christmas shopping out of the way, and Alcove Homegrown Living in Qualicum Beach is the perfect place to do. They source all their artisan-made products from within 100 miles of the store’s location, so you can be confident that any item you choose is locally made.

Struggling with what to make for dinner? Locally Inspired Vegetarian Eats (L.I.V.E. Kitchen) in the Comox Valley delivers prepared, plant-forward meals to your doorstep every Tuesday, giving you the opportunity to eat a healthy meal without the stress of figuring out what to make.

Are you ready to be served by robot? Driftwood Restaurant in Nanaimo and Mantra in Victoria have each put to work helpful robots that can deliver dishes and drinks and escort you to your table—and maybe even sing you “Happy Birthday.”

Any season is a good season for a hearty breakfast, and Whistlin’ Waffle in Campbell River knows how to fill your plate with all the good breakfast food you could want. Stick with variations on a classic benny or branch out to the sweet side with a cookies ‘n’ cream waffle or a s’mores waffle.

Congratulations

Two years running, Ace Brewing Company in Courtenay has emerged from the Canadian Brewing Awards as a medalist: in 2020 they took home silver for their Jet Fuel IPA, and this year they came proudly home with bronze.

Congratulations to the Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, which Travel and Leisure recently awarded as the second best resort in all of Canada. The top ten list was voted on by Canadians, and the Wickaninnish Inn received an impressive score of 97.0.
