Congratulations

A rare, hard-earned award was recently given to the Pollock Family Farm located in View Royal, as they reached a century of farm operations on Vancouver Island.

Fox & Monocle, whose delicious recipe graces the cover of our Fall issue, was recently named one as of Canada’s top 30 best new eateries by Air Canada’s enRoute magazine.

Things to Know

Fanny Bay Oysters has found a way to recycle their mountains of empty shells: by crushing them and offering the product as chicken feed, which increases their calcium intake and makes their egg shells harder.

In Duke Point, a new $7-million expansion to the Nanaimo Organic Waste facility recently opened, which includes new compost tunnels that reduce the time it takes organic materials to break down from 10 to 12 months to just 15 days.

New & Re-Opened

Yumbrosia Fine Foods recently reopened in Oak Bay after being closed for a few months. The corner store stocks a wide variety of European, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Indian products.

The long-awaited CRAFT Beer Market will officially be opening their doors on September 26th. They will be offering 110 taps of beer, which you can enjoy on an outdoor patio (one of which even allows dogs) or while playing bocce ball or gathering around a fireplace.

On September 22, Esquimalt Food Security Distribution Centre will be hosting an opening ceremony and featuring their retail-ready Seasonal Salads products. Run by Kitchen Connect and partner organization South Island Farm Hub, the centre seeks  to address food security gaps and support skills development and training opportunities for charities.

Gigi’s Italian & Specialty Foods is a new addition to Cordova Bay and specalizies in, you guessed it, all things Italian. They have a curated selection of Italian & specialty meats, cheeses, grocery items, hostess gifts, and knick-knacks for the home.

Jones Bar B Que will officially be opening their second location, in Langford, on September 24. They use southern techniques and local woods to create melt-in-your-mouth Texan barbeque on Vancouver Island.

To Try

Beacon Brewing has a new seasonal sour: Blue Steele Passionfruit Coconut. You’ll know it by its colour, because it is indeed blue.

Hungry Bubbas food truck in Duncan recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. If you haven’t stopped by yet, make it a point to do so and try their unique menu offerings: classic food items like burgers and hot dogs with flavourful Indigenous ingredients and products.
