Cascadia Seaweed Corporation (a BC-based company) and Nuu-chah-nulth Seafood Limited Partnership (a First Nation-owned seafood enterprise) recently signed a partnership agreement to cultivate high-quality seaweed for the global market.

The seaweed market is rapidly growing, with estimates that the global industry tops values of $6 billion USD. This partnership will utilize the West Coast’s optimal seaweed growing conditions to expand BC’s seaweed industry. But while the partnership has aggressive plans to move forward, they also plan to be very conscious of using sustainable practices. Using traditional Nuu-chah-nulth practices and upholding environmental and social responsibilities is a big part of the process, as the partnership wants to provide support and opportunities to the local coastal communities.
