Maison Cookware + Bakeware

Website

Whether you are in the market for a new whisk, cookware that will last you a lifetime, or a new espresso machine, Daniel, Julia and their team will help you find the right tool for the job.

A passion for cooking and baking along with a desire to buy the right tool the first time, led to Julia & Daniel House’s dream of one day opening their own kitchenware store. That dream became a reality in October 2016 when Maison Cookware & Bakeware opened its doors.

MAISON COOKWARE AND BAKEWARE
6332 Metral Drive #1, Nanaimo | (250) 933-1800

They source their products by researching, consulting sources such as Cook’s Illustrated, Bon Appétit and Consumer Reports, as well as testing products out in their own kitchen. “I like tools that actually work, and I’m fussy about what I use,” Julia says. “I shop the same way for our store—I want quality, effective tools that get the job done and are built to last. If I wouldn’t have it in my own kitchen, I don’t want it in my store either.”

Their preferred brand of silicone tools, for example, was chosen because of a spatula they’d been using for over 10 years that still looked new. They pride themselves on offering a variety of tools that have previously been hard to find on the Island, or sometimes even Canada, as well as being able to answer cooking and baking questions. Sous Vide is a perfect example: they carry the top-rated Anova line of devices, and will happily answer questions to help guide customers who are new to this method of cooking, in addition to carrying an array of cookbooks on the subject.

Japanese knives can be “test-driven” in-store to help you select the right knife for the user. “Simply holding a knife in your hand should only be one part of the selection process,” Daniel said. “Actually using that knife to cut carrots, for example, gives you a hands-on example of how that knife feels to use and how it will perform in your kitchen.”

Odd Society Spirits

Website

What’s in a Name?

The name ‘Odd Society’ reflects our interest to use our spirits and distillery as a way to bring together a diverse collection of creative and unique people. We wanted to make a home where you could feel comfortable revealing your inner oddness. The Odd Society is about experimentation, embracing change and celebrating our individual and collective oddities.

This philosophy extends to our ideas about distilling. Just as any successful society is made up of a variety of distinct personalities in concert, we want each of our spirits to create a cast of unforgettable characters. From the subtle and discrete Wallflower Gin to the raw and untamed Mongrel, our family of spirits is meant to fill a society and celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of the Odd Society community.

Odd Society Spirits Cocktails

The Odd Society’s tasting lounge was designed to represent the soul of Odd Society—warm and welcoming, but out of sorts and charmingly unusual. The centerpiece of the tasting lounge is a massive painting by local East Van artist, Shwa Keirstead that imagines the stills as a phantasmagorical mashing of beasts and spirits to define the unworldly character of the Odd Society.

Odd Society Distillery Artwork

Founder and Distiller Gordon Glanz holds an MSc in brewing and distilling from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland where he experimented with distilling whiskey using raw grains and commercial enzymes before studying under the masters at Springbank distillery in Campbeltown. Now back in his home town, Gordon is applying his penchant for experimentation and knowledge of tradition within the Odd Society, which he operates alongside his wife, Miriam Karp.

It is very much a family business, having sprouted from humble beginnings in Vernon, B.C. 40 years ago. As Rancho Vignola celebrates 40 years, our world is shaken up by a pandemic that is leaving many of its members in a state of isolation. We feel that by showing up for them, we are keeping this human link alive. We can’t wait to see many familiar faces that have joined us at the sale over the years and also to meet new people that are keen to stock up their pantry full of nutritious foods."

Salt Spring Wild Cider

Salt Spring Wild Cider House

Website

Salt Spring Wild Cider House

Owned and operated by a philosopher and a stone sculptor, Salt Spring Wild developed out of a passion to create quality cider from the wild apples that grow on Salt Spring Island. Some of the apples in their blends are from 100-year-old heritage trees, some are from organic orchards, and some are from wild apple trees that live in farmer’s fields and along gentle roadsides, and that once fell with the breeze.

The hard cider (almost no sugar) with its taste born of Salt Spring “terroir” and organic heritage apples became an immediate hit after Gerda Lattey and Mike Lachelt launched their business in July. A busy summer has led to not much downtime during the fall, as the couple works to press, ferment and bottle enough cider to meet the needs of next year’s market.

Learning how to create an alcoholic beverage that’s not just drinkable but enjoyable was a difficult learning process, but one that Lattey and Lachelt used their own tastes to help guide. They are doing much more than just cider on Salt Spring Island, make sure to make you way up there to drink some cider and have a visit.

Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse

Website

Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse

Bucolic booze bliss awaits at Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse, overlooking the Pat Bay Highway and the Salish Sea. “We have the perfect climate for cider apples,” says host Tammy Roberts. “No harsh frost, lots of air movement from the ocean.” Founded by sixth-generation farmer Kristen Needham Jordan, this 10-acre farm cidery makes 20 different ciders, growing some 150 varieties of apples on site and crowdsourcing heritage apples Victoria-wide.

At a long communal table, I sample ciders while snacking on a smoked salmon dip and artisan cheeses. Kings and Spies (8% ABV) is crisp and Prosecco-like. I glean why it’s popular for toasts at the 100-plus weddings Sea Cider hosts annually. The delectable Rumrunner (12% ABV), aged for six months in rum-soaked bourbon barrels, boasts an oaky flavour, augmented with molasses. After a few sips, I feel like sailing away with Frodo to the Undying Lands.

Instead, we head 15 minutes south to the Fireside Grill to lunch on duck tacos and pork belly buns. And then we boldly forge westward to the most Tolkienesque stop on this tour.
